In the land of oil rigs, windswept plains and pickup trucks with a purpose, there is a hidden camping oasis nestled between incredible white sand dunes – Monahans Sandhills State Park Campground.

This is without a doubt, our favorite stop in West Texas.

The Monahans Sandhills campground is easily accessible from the freeway but you would never know it once you arrive.  The camping is peaceful and quiet.  We loved watching the ever changing sand dunes, especially at sunrise.

You can even go “sledding” on the sand dunes.  If you are feeling adventurous, rent a disc sled at the camp store and give it a try.

Each campsite has a covered shelter and picnic table.  We prefer sites 1-10 because they provide a great view of the dunes from your site.  The pull through sites in this section are situated parallel to the road and your RV doors open right onto the dunes.

Taking an afternoon off (or even a whole day!) at Monahans Sandhills in between travel days is a great way to sneak in a mini vacation while on the road.

Tip for kids: Pick up the Junior Ranger booklet and present the completed booklet to the office for a Junior Ranger badge.
